Ritual
Devotees observe a waterless fast.
On this day, they take the small murti "Lalji," of the Lord and the
clay murti of Ganeshji to a river bank or lake shore. Here, both are
offered pujan, arti and "thaal" five times. After each pujan, both are
taken for a short boat ride. During these boating rituals, devotees
sing kirtans which express sentiments of "sharnaagati" - surrenderance
to the Lord and Guru - in delivering them across the ocean of Samsara.
The Lord is thanked too for rain and brimming the rivers and lakes
After the fifth pujan, Ganeshji is submerged (ref. article on Ganesh
Chaturthi).
Chopped cucumber pieces and "ladus" are offered as prasad. The former
are also sprinkled into the water, for the merit of aquatic creatures.
