Promoting Piety
It was Lord Swaminarayan who,
at the young age of twenty-one, was given the reins of the Sampradaya
by His guru Ramanand Swami. Then for the next thirty years He travelled
widely in Gujarat to successfully instill in the people a high sense
of morality and spirituality. The religious path shown by Him promotes
piety of conduct, thought, rites and inner self. He persuaded householders
to shun bad habits and ascetics to shed attachments. Above all, He created
spiritual awareness in people by celebrating festivals, conducting yagnas
without animal sacrifices and founding majestic mandirs. The mandirs
fostered traditions, devotion, social services and spiritual vigor in
the masses. Lord Swaminarayan moved from place to place raising the
downtrodden and ignorant classes to the heights of inner happiness.
