On the 3 July 2004 the Johannesburg
Satsang Mandal hosted a Children’s Fun Day. Inspired
by Pujya Pramukh Swami Maharaj children from children’s
shelters, as well as from neighbouring informal settlements
were invited to the mandir.
In the morning, satsangis drove
to the various homes to pick up the children ranging in
age from three up to about fifteen. Approximately fifty
children from various places around Johannesburg were brought
to the mandir. Also present were about fifty balaks and
balikas who normally attend the satsang assembly.
The day began with the children
visiting the inside of the mandir. For most it was the first
time that they had entered a mandir. They were a given a
small and simple talk on the basics of Hinduism and then
participated in performing arti. The older children enjoyed
holding the divo plates while the younger children took
pleasure in ringing the bell.
The children then had a late
breakfast after which the fun events began. Jumping castles
had been arranged as well as other fun games. Satsangi children
mixed freely with the children from the shelters as they
ventured from one game to another. Yuvaks had dressed in
costume characters to entertain the children and this proved
very popular. Lunch was later served and the children were
then all treated to gifts. Throughout the day, the women
devotees ensured that all the children were fed well.
A very tired group of children then
were taken home late in the day. All present benefitted
from the experience.
