Saturday 8 September
2001, Clifton, NJ
The Ladies’ wing of the New York, Philadelphia, Edison, Jersey City, and Clifton mandals spent the evening of September 8 coming together at a ladies’ samaiyo in Clifton, New Jersey.
The samaiyo was narrated by two characters who represented samay (time) and utsav (festivals). Also, throughout the samaiyo, there was a blacklight musical. The ongoing musical and the ongoing dialogue between samay and utsav gave everyone the knowledge about the importance and significance of various festivals of the Indian calendar.
The highlight of the samaiyo was the celebration of the holy months of Chaturmaas. Clifton Kishori Mandal performed a garbo on the Hindolo utsav. New York Kishori Mandal’s Krishnaleela Ballet celebrated Janmashtmi. There was also a skit on Raksha Bandhan expressing the importance of family relations, especially those between brother and sister. A skit showing the importance of mothers by narrating the story of Ganpati, Kartikey, and Parvati.
This samaiyo was attended by Amy Peterson, a prestigious lawyer who practices in Clifton. She was instrumental in the legal proceedings in obtaining Clifton Mandir. To top off the evening, Maharaj and Swami joined in on the festivities by glowing in blacklight, to commemorate the main feature of the samaiyo: the use of blacklight. Truly, it was a samaiyo to be remembered by all.
