Festivals of the “Diwali”, the last day of the year, and “Annakut”, the first day of the New Year in the Hindu calendar, were celebrated with great devotion and enthusiasm at Washington D.C. BAPS Mandir.On Diwali day, a children’s Diwali Party was organized in the afternoon and included several joyous activities, including a professional magic show. In the evening, devotees including businessmen, gathered to participate in the traditional "Chopda Pujan" ceremony. On New Year’s day devotees from surrounding areas visited the temple throughout the day for Darshan of the Annakut, and to offer their prayers and seek blessing from Lord Swaminarayan and Pramukh Swami Maharaj.

In the morning assembly Pujya Viveknidhi Swami delivered a spiritual discourse on Diwali. The assembly was comprised of many honorable guests including Mr. Dyson (Senator, Maryland), Mr. Anil Kumar Gupta (Embassy of India - Minister of Personal & Community Affairs), Mr. Chris Osuji (Executive Director for PG County Office of Community Relations), Mr. Natver Gandhi (Chif Financial Officer of Washington DC Government), and Elisha B. Pulivarti (Executive Director - Maryland Governor’s Office).

 


26 October 2003, Sunday, St. Louis, MO:

Visitors crossed through the doors of the St. Louis BAPS Mandir to celebrate Diwali and the Hindu New Year of the Vikram era. In adherence to one of the traditional manners of celebrating New Year’s Day, the members of the BAPS Mandir prepared an Annakut placed before the idols installed in the Mandir. The singing of Thaals opened the offering of Annakut.

Maharaj’s Shihasan was decorated as an old-style hut (Jupdi) with real wood and hay. Also Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s idol was put on bullock cart with an old style bed (Khatlo) and real trees. Katherin Bish, a photographer for The St. Louis Post Dispatch and St. Louis Magazine, said, “as soon as I walked into your temple I saw your Guru’s photo and felt like He was a real person present and looking at me. During my photograph sessions I sensed that He was telling me how to take pictures and it looked like He was posing for me. I saw real divinity.”

Colorful traditional rangoli prepared by Kishori Mandal and vibrant lights in the foyer greeted haribhaktos who witnessed the grand Diwali celebrations at San Jose mandir. The New Year’s day started with Prabhatiyas sung in front of Thakorji. A surprise awaited everyone in the name of this year’s theme “Annakut in Kailash.”

The Samaiyo sabha was full of varieties, highlighting the meaning and importance of the New Year in one’s life. A speech on Parivarik Ekta signified the importance of having Samp in the family and Satsang. Sabha concluded on a high note with Aashirvad from Pujya Swami Bapa.

 


2 November 2003, Sunday, Raleigh, NC:

The Raleigh Satsang Mandal celebrated the Diwali festival with a program which included kirtans, speeches, a dance by the Bal Mandal and a skit highlighting the importance of Diwali and benefits of going to Mandir regularly. A Kishore did a speech on the “Importance of Diwali – made simple” for the youth and non-gujarati audience. There was also a kirtan which was written and composed by the Yuvak Mandal of Raleigh – “Diwali Ayee Bhakti Deep Jale.” The program concluded with Param Pujya Swamishri’s aashirwad.

The Philadelphia BAPS Mandir celebrated the Diwali and Annakut festivals with great jubilation. The Annakut was decorated with rotating dining table with Maharaj, Gunatitanand Swami, and Guru Parampara murtis alongside. In the Diwali Celebration sabha, there was a Kirtan Aradhana by Kishores, cultural program/dance by Balaks, and Pujya Viveknidhi Swami’s speech about Diwali. On New Year’s Day there was another kirtan bhakti during the evening sabha and everyone enjoyed Swamibapa’s Diwali Ashirvad on the overhead projection screen.

The Jersey City BAPS Mandir celebrated the festival of Diwali very successfully and understandingly.The actual days of Dhan Teras and Diwali were celebrated in proper tradition which also included a Chopda Pujan on Diwali performed with the traditional Vaidik Vidhi.

On the day of Hindu New Year the hall was full of people for the morning aarti. All were in joy and enthusiastic mood to wish each other a happy new year. The curtains were opened later in the morning and all had a great labh of having Darshan of Akshar – Purushottam Maharaj with a great Annakut offered to them. Thaals were sung and then all haribhaktos offered aarti to Maharaj. The evening program was in the presence of Pujya Santos and included kirtans, a dance by the Bal Mandal, and the message of samp. The sabha was capped off with video Aashirvad of Pramukh Swami Maharaj.

The Annkut Samaiyo was celebrated at Augusta Temple with a lot of excitement, joy and happiness.

Haribhaktos from the Augusta area brought a variety of items for the annakut which were arranged decoratively in front of Maharaj and Swami’s murtis. The annakut was opened at 12:00 noon with the first Aarti. The evening samaiyo included several speeches and were interspersed with kirtans. The speeches highlighted topics such as the necessity for samp, and the importance of family unity and following Swami’s agna of Ghar Sabha.

 


26 October 2003, Sunday, West Chester, NY:

Diwali and New Year Annakut celebrations were celebrated with great enthusiasm at the Westchester BAPS Mandir by the devotees and visitors. On Diwali day people attended the Chopda Pujan which was performed with tradition rituals.

The New Year Day celebrations began early with devotees wishing each other Nutan Varsh Abhinandan, followed by Aarti. Pujya Amritcharit Swami and Pujya Vivikyogi Swami were present in the morning and delivered inspiring discourses. Rajbhog Aarti was in presence of Pujya Santo, devotees and visitors. The evening assembly included kirtans appropriate for the occasion and a Pravachan in Hindi on Ektaa. Invited guests included Major Donors for the Mandir, the Electrician John Malovsky and the construction workers who worked to complete the major work prior to the Grand Opening.

 






26 October 2003, Sunday, Dallas, TX :

On the first day of the Hindu New Year (Vikram Samvat 2060), haribhaktos visited the Dallas BAPS Mandir for darshan of the Annakut where items of vegetarian food were devotionally prepared, decoratively displayed and lovingly offered to the deities. Thaals were sung followed by the Aarti to offer the food items to Maharaj.

In the presence of Pujya Jnanpurush Swami and Pujya Anoopam Swami, the Dallas mandal celebrated the Diwali Samiayo with a lot of excitement and dedication in the evening. The Program was rich in content and well received by all attendees, which included some community leaders from the DFW metroplex. The samiayo included kirtans and discourses. Annakut darshan along with beautifully adorned murtis in colorful vaghas and Utsav murti of Gunatitanand Swami, Bhagatji Maharaj, and Pramukh Swami Maharaj created a divine atmosphere felt by all devotees. Pujya Jnanpurush Swami gave a discourse on Diwali and a new year. The samaiyo ended with Param Pujya Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s audio blessings given at Gondal temple in India for the new year.

The Columbus BAPS Mandir celebrated its Diwali festivals including Sharda Puja, Bestu Varsh, and Annakut with great joy in the presence of Pujya Tyagratna Swami and Pujya Munitilak Swami.

On Diwali Day haribhaktos participated in the morning Aarti and Chopda Pujan conducted by the Saints. The Yuvak, Kishore, Kishori, Bal, Balika Mandals put together an exhibition depicting our Guru-Parampara, the necessity of a Mandir, and the nine days of Diwali exhibits. The Kishore-Kishori Mandal also organized a Bal Diwali Party where they played various games. Many items were offered to Maharaj and Swami in the Annakut. Haribhaktos came early in the morning for Aarti to do the Darshan of Shreeji Maharaj and Pramukh Swami Maharaj. Thaals were sung to offer the Annakut to Maharaj. The evening program highlights included a kirtan bhakti program, and a video speech about Diwali and New Year by Pramukh Swami Maharaj.

The Clifton BAPS Mandir celebrated with great fervor this year’s Diwali and Hindu New Year celebration. On Diwali day devotees, including local businessmen, participated in the Chopda Pujan, a ceremony sanctifying personal and business accounting books.

On the Hindu New Year’s day, devotees celebrated this auspicious day seeking the blessings of Lord Swaminarayan with morning aarti. A grand Annakut was celebrated with great jubilation and passion. The deities were offered different sumptuous and colorful arrays of vegetarian items. A special morning sabha was held where a speech elaborated on the Hindu New Year and the meaning of Diwali. Devotees sang Thaal and performed the Annakut aarti. Yuvak Kirtan Aradhana, Bal Kirtan and dance, video darshan, and slide show interspersed throughout the day. Local dignitaries, including the Mayor of Clifton, NJ, also attended the festivity. Clifton Bal mandal also organized a “Bal Annakut” with games and gift exchange ritual.

Before the beginning of the Annakut Samaiyo all haribhaktos performed aarti in traditional dress. The Samaiyo included Diwali bhajans, a Power Point Presentation by the Kishore Mandal and a samvad titled “Aap Ke Charano Kaa Prataap” by the Bal Mandal. The samaiyo ended with the singing of Thaals to Maharaj.

27 October 2003, Monday, Birmingham, AL :

The Birmingham BAPS Satsang Mandal celebrated the first day of the New Year with a fabulous Annakut samaiyo.

The day began with a Sneh Milan time during which devotees arrived early to greet each other and wish one another a good start to the New Year. The Annakut samaiyo included kirtans and two skits on life lessons. The samaiyo continued with Aarti after the Annkut display full of many items prepared with love and devotion was opened for all to enjoy. The samaiyo was capped off by the singing of thaals and a second aarti.

The Cleveland BAPS Mandir celebrated the Diwali Samaiyo with much devotion and jubilation. The Chopda-Pujan ceremony took place the day before in the presence of P. Tyagratna Swami and P. Munitilak Swami. The day of the Samaiyo consisted of Aartis starting with the grand Annakut Aarti. The Samaiyo included kirtans, speeches and presentations regarding the history and importance of Diwali. The program also focused on improving our lives as individuals in every aspect of life for the New Year. The program finally concluded with the Aashirvachan of Swamishri giving the strength on how to lead our lives in the start of this New Year.

25 October 2003, Saturday, Charlotte, NC :

The Charlotte BAPS Mandir held celebrations to commemorate the auspicious occasion of Diwali and New Years. Saturday evening, both children and adults alike were invited to take part in Aarti and Chopada pujan facilitated by Pujya Shantmurti Swami and Pujya Amrutnandan Swami.

On the morning of Bestu Varsh devotees gathered to perform the morning Aarti. At noon thaals were sung to offer the Annakut food to Maharaj and Swami. The samaiyo had a potpourri of devotional songs, dramas, multimedia shows, speeches, and dances. Dr. K.C. Patel elaborated on the importance of donating, not only money, but also mind, body and soul to the mandir. The program ended with the divine blessing for the New Year by Pramukh Swami Maharaj.

For all Hindus the world over, Diwali is a time of family gatherings and in various places throughout India, it marks the end of the year. In celebration of Diwali and the New Year, the BAPS Shree Swaminarayan Mandir in Edison, NJ hosted a grand two day celebration. On Saturday October 25, the festivities began early with the childrens’ Diwali Celebration Carnival. The carnival was as much fun as it was educational. The children learned the history and origin of this festival and were gifted various prizes and goodies. Later in the afternoon, a special session was held for the more senior members of BAPS.

In the evening, hundreds of people gathered for Sharda Pujan, better known as Chopda Pujan. In this pujan, ledgers and accounting books are placed before the idols and a special prayer is delivered so that one’s finances remain sound for the coming year. New Year’s Day started off with a large gathering of devotees for the first aarti (prayer in which a light is waved as a symbol of the physical, mental, and spiritual light God provides). Beginning at 10:00 am, a cultural program was performed by the children and youths of BAPS and was sanctified by Sadhu Yagnavallabhdas and Sadhu Haridarshandas. Thereafter, over 1500 different items of food were decoratively placed before the idols to thank God for all the food He provides. Before one could leave, all visitors were treated to a delicious meal. BAPS had also set up a walk through exhibition describing the various days of Diwali.

Many dignitaries and well wishers graced this event. Some of the notable guests included New Jersey Governor James McGreevey, United States Senator Jon A. Corzine.

Diwali, popularly known as the ‘Festival of Lights’, was celebrated with great enthusiasm at the Clarkston BAPS Temple.

On this darkest day of the month, people light divas symbolically praying to the Lord for inner enlightenment, and food from the recent harvest are first offered to the Lord. The annakut was displayed with food items placed on steps leading up to the idols in eight different miniature temples. Many decorative fruit baskets, cakes, flower arrangements and rangolis accompanied the annakut. Inspired by His Divine Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj, the celebration was an immense success.

The Diwali and Annakut festivals were celebrated with great devotion at the Boston BAPS Mandir where many devotees had darshan of the annakut offerings.

Shri Akshar Purushottam Maharaj and Shri Radha Krishna were adorned in beautiful Mugats, Jariyani Vagha and delicate jewelry. New Years Day started with Aarti at 7:00am.A giant annakut was offered and upon completion of annakut display, devotees sang Maha Thaals. In the eveninga special celebration program was held featuring an enlightening speech about “Parivaarik Ekta and Samp,” and devotional kirtans. Bal-Balika Diwali Party:This year, the Boston mandal arranged a Bal-Balika Diwali Party where they played different games, won prizes, and had different continental foods.

 


26 October 2003, Sunday, Cherry Hill, NJ:

From dawn to dusk on Kartik Sud 1, Sunday in the year VS 2060 Shreeji Maharaj was seated on the ‘Otlo” facing East. He was dressed in brown and golden woven vastra with a rose in his right hand. The leaves in the tree in the back of Maharaj were changing color that matched his colorful vastras.

The occasion was Diwali & New Year Annakut celebration at Cherry Hill BAPS Mandir where haribhaktos offered many items in an Annakut to Maharaj and Swami. This year the theme focused on decorating the Mandir like Dada Khacher’s Darbar and court yard. In the midst of all the varieties of dishes in the Annakut was a giant milk chocolate Hershey bar. The highlight of the celebration was the evening sabha which included a dance, drama, kirtans, and speeches. Along with Pujya Viveknidhi Swami and Pujya Bhaktiswaroop Swami, The Mayor of the Township of Cherry Hill, Honorable Bernie Platt and other Camden County officials attended and addressed the assembly.

The Houston BAPS Temple organized a four-day Diwali-Annakut festival where the traditional rituals of Dhan Teras, Kali Chaudash, Diwali or Deep Utsav, and New Year’s Day were celebrated.

A Vedic Mahapuja was held on Diwali day to welcome the New Year and prayers were offered for world peace, prosperity, success and happiness. The evening Cultural program included a festival dance performed by children, bhajans sung by youths and elevating spiritual discourses by saints.

An annakut was displayed for New Year’s Day and included delicious dishes prepared by devotees and well-wishers. People turned up early in the morning to perform the mangla aarti after which they also received the blessings of Pramukh Swami. It was a joy to start the New Year with Swamishri’s blessings and words of wisdom. The annakut aarti was performed at noon after which people had the opportunity to have darshan of the Annakut which was themed in tune with the new traditional mandir to be inaugurated next summer.

The joyous festivals of Diwali and Annakut/New Year were celebrated with great enthusiasm at the Palm Beach BAPS Mandir.Diwali was celebrated with traditional Laxmi Pujan and Chopda Pujan. A special Diwali Celebration was also arranged for Bal/Balika and Kishore/Kishori Mandal.

The theme of this year’s Annakut decoration was “Haveli.” Intricately carved “Zharukha”, columns, and carved arches were the major attractions. Serene and colorful lights placed beneath the “Zharukha” gave a wonderful get-up to the decoration. A magnificent Annakut was arranged in front of Shri Akshar Purushottam Maharaj and Shri Radha-Krishna Dev. Many vegetarian dishes, drinks, and decoratively carved fruits were devoutly offered to the Lord. Food was first offered to Maharaj by the singing of thaals, then the Annakut Aarti was performed. Pujya Shantmurti Swami and Pujya Amrutnandan Swami performed the evening aarti.A cultural program was performed in a marquee erected outside the Mandir. The program included kirtans in the form of a kawaali, dances and a skit.

Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights and the New Year, were celebrated with much fanfare at the New York B.A.P.S. Mandir.

Discourses by Pujya Santo on the necessity to unite for good causes and the reestablishment of family values, singing of kirtans, pujas and a display of different kinds of homemade delicacies prepared for Annakuta offered to the Lord Swaminarayan, were highlights of the two-day celebrations. Invitees, including a number of leaders from different communities, praised the offerings, decorations and the spirit of brotherhood during the celebrations. An audio blessing for the New Year, given by Pramukh Swami, was welcomed by a loud applause by the attendees.

The guests who graced the occasion included: Honorable Councilman John Liu, Ambassador-at-large Bhisma K. Agnihotri, MP from India, C. P. Radhakishnan, Ms. Uma Sengupta, Overseas Indian Congress president Dr. Malhotra, Kiran Mehta, Bipin Sangankar and a number of leaders of various Indian cultural organizations.

 


26 October 2003, Sunday, Orlando, FL:

New Years Day was celebrated in a grand manner at the Orlando BAPS Temple. The day commenced with the aarti at 7.00 am and Sneh Milan. Decorations included a waterfall in front of the stage. Haribhaktos and community members offered many items to Maharaj and Swami. Thaad commenced at 11:30 am and the annakut aarti was performed at 12:05 pm. Pujya Shantmurti Swami and Pujya Amrutnandan Swami performed the 4:30 pm Aarti and immediately thereafter drove to Miami to perform the 7:00 pm Annakut aarti at the Miami Temple. Video presentations containing Pujya Pramukh Swami Maharaj's blessings were shown throughout the day, and the youth wing presented a program of Kirtan Bhakti.

The chief guests in attendance for the evening program were Orange County Commissioners Homer Hartage and Linda Stewart, and Former Senator Mr. Bill McCollum. The climax of the evening was a professional fireworks display

The Toronto BAPS Mandir celebrated the Diwali and Annakut Utsav with grandeur where people from the Greater Toronto Area joined in celebrating the dawn of the New Year, marked with the Haveli Pravesh along with the eagerly awaited arrival of guru Pramukh Swami Maharaj.

The morning commenced with the first Aarti of the New Year followed by blessings from Pujya Priyavrat Swami. The murtis of Shriji Maharaj and Gunatitanand Swami in enchanting turquoise vagha crowned the glorious medley of over 1150 food items. Several murtis of Swamishri placed at various points along with Thakorji provided a focal point for darshan. After Thaals and Aarti, Pujya Gnanpriya Swami blessed the assembly. Dignitaries such as Roy Cullen, MP; Harinder Takhar, Minister of Transportation for Province of Ontario; Shafiq Qadri, MPP; and City of Toronto Mayoral candidates – David Miller (now elected as Mayor!) and John Tory participated in the celebrations. “The Haveli is a breathtaking contribution of BAPS to Canada and is a tribute of your commitment. I would like the … people of Toronto and Ontario to visit this Haveli.” The Minister brought the greetings from the Premier and pledged his utmost support to realize the community’s vision for Toronto and Canada.

After the Annakut darshan, each individual was guided through the Haveli Exhibition and was provided an insight into the various social and environmental activities that are conducted under the auspices of BAPS. Going further, an opportunity to perform an ‘Abhishekh’ for Nilkanth Varni was provided to everyone.
