During a grand yagna in 1883, Acharya Viharilalji Maharaj initiated Dungar Bhakta into the saffron order. He was then renamed as Swami Yagnapurushdas. On returning to Surat, he remained in the personal service of his guru. Whenever time permitted he also concentrated on his scriptural and Sanskrit studies. Soon, he enthusiastically participated in the various services and administrative duties of the Swaminarayan mandir.
