Gujarati Daal
 

Ingredients Recipes

Cooking Time: 30 min.
Serves: 2 persons


Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of ashar (tuver daal)
  • 1 medium-sized tomato
  • 1 dry red chilli
  • 2 tablespoons oil or ghee
  • ½ tablespoon mustard seeds
  • ¼ teaspoon fenugreek seeds (methi)
  • 2 green chillies - cut into long pieces
  • 1 small piece of ginger - cut into long pieces
  • 2 tablespoons jaggery or 2 tablespoons sugar
  • juice of one lemon
  • salt to taste
  • ¼ teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 tablespoon red chilli powder

Garnish:

  • 2 tablespoons chopped green coriander

Method:

  • wash tuver daal properly and soak in hot water for 15 minutes
  • then cook in pressure cooker, with salt and tomatoes cut into big pieces
  • cook on medium heat for 15 to 20 minutes (about 3 whistles of pressure cooker)
  • when cooked, strain out the daal
  • in a saucepan heat oil or ghee
  • put little mustard,fenugreek still it splutters
  • add the dry red chilli, chilli-ginger paste and stir
  • then pour in the daal
  • add turmeric powder, chilli powder, jaggery and boil for 10 minutes
  • add lemon juice, garnish with green coriander

serve with plain rice
