History
During His pilgrimage
of India, Nilkanth Varni visited Surat. Great devotees of
Lord Swaminarayan such as Ardeshar Kotwal and Bhaichand Sheth
lived in Surat.
Over the years, Bhagatji
Maharaj, Shastriji Maharaj and Yogiji Maharaj taught the Akshar
Purushottam philosophy as revealed by Lord Swaminarayan in
the Vachanamrutam. Their efforts attracted many spiritual
seekers and in 1975, a hari mandir was inaugurated in the
Nanavati area by Pramukh Swami Maharaj. At this time, the
pictorial murtis previously at Kampala Mandir (which had at
the time been closed by the political regime in Uganda) were
installed.
The number of devotees increased and so work began for a larger
mandir and ancillary buildings in 1985.
After 11 years of the dedicated, determined and devoted service
by sadhus and devotees, Pramukh Swami Maharaj performed the
murti pratishtha in 1996.
